Luis Bogran Elementary and Middle School

A short bike ride from my house in San Juan, there is a bustling elementary/middle school. Students and teachers gather here daily. Every day, the halls buzz with the energy of 75 enthusiastic kiddos from 1st to 6th grade, filling the air from 7:00 am to 11:30. Then, the teenage takeover happens!  From 12:30 to 5:00 the 75 middle schoolers (7th through 9th graders) replace the childlike energy with a teenage vibe.

This school is the only school in the community that serves these age groups. If the children would like to continue their education at a high school level, they must travel 30 min into town and enroll at one of the public schools in center city Tela.

This is where we teach English. Our goal is to transform this already bilingual school (they learn Spanish and their native dialect Garifuna) into a trilingual powerhouse.

For the last 2 years we have served teaching 7th through 9th graders. This year we expand to cover 1st through 9th!

Learning English here is like finding a golden ticket! In Honduras, it can flip lives upside down. A person who speaks English fluently can work at a call center, cruise ship, hotels and big business. These jobs can provide a 30%+ increase in their income potential. With this one toll in their toolbox, their opportunities almost double.

English also increases their ability to travel and meet new people. Serving as missionary translators or maybe even an opportunity to study abroad.

We have witnessed it all! These success stories are not just dreams or ideas at Proyecto Proposito they are real names and lives transformed!
