July 12, 2024 – Day 46– A Modern Day Leviticus

While reading and studying the book of Leviticus during the last few weeks, I can’t help but ask myself: “What would God write in a nowadays version of this iconic book?” This book can be so polarizing and insulting to the modern-day mindset. Written at the time, it made sense. These rules and regulations were largely related to pagan rituals, and infirmities, trying to end the plethora of bad behaviors.

Would He want to limit the amount of social media posts? Would He set a clothing minimum for public appearances? Would He prohibit statements like “you’re too young” or “you’re too old”, which create an unhealthy divide? He might limit our food choice, since we clearly do not regulate our locus of control. Would he get rid of listening devices, so we had to actually speak to each other? Would He make charity illegal? Would putting empty containers back in the fridge, be punishable by death? – OK, that one was more of a me problem.

Would he restrict the amount of perfume a human is allowed to wear? Would passive aggressive behaviors get you thrown in jail? Maybe, just maybe, leaving nasty food in the microwave would be mentioned.

Humans do not like to be told what to do. Our egos and our pride get in the way. Take a moment and look around. Think about your neighbor, your best friend, your kid, yourself. We need guidance. There is no modern-day Leviticus because upon ascending into heaven, Jesus left the Holy Spirit to live in us and show us the way. Do this, don’t do that. If you are quiet and still you can hear Him. If you feel lost, you two need to talk.
