Genesis 4-10,

Spoiler alert. Cain kills Abel (Genesis 4). After having two beautiful boys, something I can relate to, conflict between them arises. That conflict sadly ends in Abel’s death. Cain is sent away, showing God’s unending mercy, and Seth was born in Abel’s place.

There are 10 generations between Seth and Noah, the next protagonist in our story. My son asked me, “how do you know that?”  I quickly answered, it is in the Bible (Genesis 5). Linage is important because it is what connects the Father to the Son. It connects the Old Testament to the New Testament. It connects then to the now. Without it, the Bible would be a fictional narrative of epic proportions. With it, it becomes a sacred text.

A witness named Gilgamesh, watched as a crazy man built a ship and housed thousands of animals on it in preparation for a flood. This Sumerian king was on a long list of Kings that ruled in Antient Mesopotamia. It was in that space that Noah built his ark. As the other cultures gawked and speculated, Noah listened. He followed precise instructions detail by detail.  Looking back at the Sumerian King List, written on clay tablets found along the Euphrates River, we see there was in fact a flood. Not only was there a flood but after the flood people mysteriously started living much shorter lives. A mystery solved when reading the story of Noah’s Ark (Genesis 4-10)
