Genesis 12-15, Psalm 4 (A Psalm of David to be performed to music)

From Noah (Genesis 6) to Abraham (Genesis 12) there are 10 generations. Given an order by God, Abraham in obedience left his hometown of Ur with his nephew, Lot, and his wife Sara. Using seemingly negative events (famine, abuse, agitation, constant turmoil) God allows Abraham to become very wealthy.

Lot, Abraham’s nephew also grew wealthy. Their households started to quarrel (Genesis 13). Abraham gave Lot first pick of land, and they separated. Protecting their relationship by making the choice to give space.

Lot chose land in the plain of the Jordan. After Lot leaves, the Lord makes Abrham a promise. Genesis 13 14-17: “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring[a] forever. 16 I will make your offspring like dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. 17 Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.” An amazing promise. The promise of the lineage continues.

Living on his own, Lot gets into trouble (Genesis 14). Abraham intervenes and saves Lot from his captors. This is not the first and will not be the last time Abraham steps in for Lot. Their family tie is clearly important to Abrham.

Despite feeling the need to call out to God in the middle of distress (Psalm 4), David expresses faith in God and the peace that a relationship with Him brings.
