We start at the beginning. When opening the Bible to that first page (Genesis 1), God marks a beginning. It was the beginning of the world as we know it, and it is also a beginning for you and I as we start this adventure into reading the scriptures.
After arduous work, something God expects from everyone not excluding Himself, God rested (Genesis 2). He took one day out of seven to rest. Many times, when I push myself past my limits and subject myself to unfair goals, I think back to the emphasis that our creator puts on rest. Rest is part of our design. Without it, we cannot work in optimum conditions. If you want to get a lot done, prioritize rest.
The serpent found a way into Eve’s heart though her doubt (Genesis 3). On a spiritual journey, doubt is everywhere. Part of the learning journey on our walk is based on the strength of our faith. Our faith ultimately is a doubt repellent. Learning to drive back doubt, and to not allow it into our lives is a necessary step on our spiritual journey. When I am feeling attacked by doubt, I center my mind on my breathing and when I feel ready, on my last breath, I pushout the doubt handing over to God. We cannot handle it alone. Taking pause in the middle of uncertainty and giving it over to God, who can handle anything, is key.
Once doubt opened the door, Eve lost herself in the desires of her flesh. Our ego calls out to be strong and powerful. We want to be the best and come in first place. Finding a place of humility where we can put God first, is essential. The serpent convinced Eve by saying: (Genesis 3:5)” You will be like God, knowing good and evil.” With this promise of power, Eve made her choice. Unknowingly, Eve now subjected herself to a life of decision making. Good and evil was now hers to decern and the full weight of being human (not God) was felt. We know what it feels like to feel the weight of our humanity and choices. Although we cannot go back and change Eve’s decision, we can grow a relationship with God, relinquish control, and surrender. What a beautiful word, surrender.
The Wisdom Psalm (Psalm 1) starts off this book of lyrical poetry. It reminds us how all the work we do in our spiritual lives will be rewarded. Promises of prosperity and fruit, strength and righteousness make Psalm 1 a great place to go to remind yourself why you’re on this journey to begin with.
