In 1 Kings 8, the glory of the Lord fills the house in a cloud. Solomon prays a powerful dedication, recognizing that even heaven cannot contain God, and emphasizing the privilege and mercy He shows by living among His people. God is not limited by buildings—He wants our hearts.
In 1 Kings 9, God appears to Solomon a second time. He confirms that He has heard Solomon’s prayer. He also warns Solomon not to allow anything to divert him or his descendants from their walk with God. God warns that the Temple could become a ruin and Israel could be cut off. When developing a relationship with God, we can use this warning as a reminder that even God sets limits.
In 1 Kings 10, the Queen of Sheba visits Solomon; she is impressed. She is amazed at his wisdom, wealth, and the worship of God. Israel flourishes, but signs of extravagance and reliance on wealth begin to appear. We should take an inventory of our attachments—they can quickly and quietly sneak into our lives and steal first place.
Psalm 96 is an invitation to all nations to recognize God’s greatness through joyful worship and reverent praise.
