God asks Abraham for something that seems completely unfair (Genesis 22). He asks Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. After everything that this family went through to get to where they were, sacrificing Isaac seems unreasonable.
There are two lessons that bring me peace when reading Genesis 22. First, we must trust God blindly. We have to be all in. On our walk, there will be times where God asks us to do arbitrary, unfair, and demanding things. These tasks are outside of our understanding, but having faith in the person of God and His purpose is key. Second, this story reminds me that God makes us relinquish attachment to things that we put before Him. He must go first. Sounds a little daunting. It might help that by putting Him first you guarantee a blessed outcome.
Sadly, all lives on Earth come to an end (Genesis 23). We see Sarah die at 127 years old. Abraham goes out of his way to honor her. He finds himself in foreign land, but even here he is respected. After being offered a place to bury Sarah for free, he insists on paying. Doing the right things for the right reasons, Abraham continues his walk after his loss.
Jumping over to Psalm 7 to finish our reading today, we see David stuck in a misunderstanding. David was accused of waiting for Saul dead to steal his throne. Instead of responding to the accusations, David calls out to God for justice and writes Psalm 7.
