In 2 Chronicles 9, the queen of Sheba visits Solomon to test his wisdom with hard questions. She is amazed by what she sees. Solomon’s wealth, wisdom, and fame are unmatched, and everything points to God’s blessing. Although the book of Chronicles does not mention Solomon’s spiritual decline, we know of it from reading Kings. Solomon dies after reigning for 40 years and is buried in the city of David.

In 2 Chronicles 10, Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, takes the throne. The kingdom splits in two, Israel in the north and Judah in the south. Pride and poor leadership can quickly undo what took years to build.

In 2 Chronicles 11, Rehoboam prepares for war but surprisingly listens to God and backs off, showing obedience. He strengthens Judah’s defenses and welcomes Levites form the north. He is connected and obedient to the Lord, for a time.

In 2 Chronicles 12, we see Rehoboam become strong. He immediately forgets the Lord. In this moment of weakness Egypt attacks. Rehoboam humbles himself and God shows mercy, although Judah can not escape the consequences. Rehoboam rested with his ancestors and his son, Abijah, became king.

Psalm 118 is a victory song and was sung during joyful festivals. It’s a reminder that God’s love never quits.
